Vara-Grandma's-Recipe-Rome-Italy-10

Ciao, my dear!

Rome is lovely in the fall—cool breezes, golden leaves, and quieter streets. I wandered through Piazza Navona today and found a little stall serving mulled wine. It was wonderfully fragrant—full of cinnamon, orange peel, and just a touch of sweetness. I wrapped my hands around the warm cup and enjoyed every soothing sip.

Sending love from this beautiful city.

With Love,

Roman Hug in a Mug

Mulled wine is a warm, aromatic drink traditionally made by gently heating red wine with a blend of spices, citrus, and a touch of sweetness. As it steeps, the flavors mingle into something comforting and fragrant—think cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and orange peel filling the air with a cozy, festive scent.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

HOW TO MAKE IT:

PAIR WITH:

  • A holiday party surrounded by friends and family

  • A cozy fireplace

  • Relaxing after the stress of the holidays

What I Learned

  • The Romans were among the first to heat wine and add spices. They believed it helped keep them healthy and ward off winter illnesses. Mulled wine spread across Europe as the Roman Empire expanded.
  • The term “mulled” comes from the Old English word mullen, meaning “to crush or grind,” referring to the crushing of spices added to the wine.

  • Mulled wine became a classic winter holiday drink in Northern Europe, especially in Germany (where it’s called Glühwein) and Scandinavia (Glögg).

  •

Sangre del Sol Brandy

Our Sangre del Sol Brandy is smooth, warming, and perfect for winding down after a feast. With its deep amber hue and notes of caramel, dried fruit, and spice, it’s a wonderful companion for pecan pie, chocolate desserts, or a classic pumpkin pie.

Postcards from Grandma | New recipe from Goa!

Dear ones —
The sun in Goa is relentless, and the air smells of spice and sea. Yesterday I wandered through the old Latin Quarter and found a shaded café where sailors and merchants swap stories.
There I met a dashing traveler who shared the secret to surviving these sweltering days: gin and tonic, its bitterness softened with lime. They say it keeps the mosquitoes (and fever) away—but I think it keeps the spirits high. I sipped, listened to the waves, and felt the world open wide. Who knew medicine could taste like adventure?

Love you,
Grandma

Postcards from Grandma | New recipe from Manhattan!

Dear ones,
I wandered into a cozy little spot in Manhattan today and, wouldn’t you know, I finally tried a Manhattan cocktail. Smooth, a little strong, and just the right touch of sweetness—much like the city itself. I sipped slowly, watching the world bustle by outside, and thought of you. With love,
Grandma
