Rome is lovely in the fall—cool breezes, golden leaves, and quieter streets. I wandered through Piazza Navona today and found a little stall serving mulled wine. It was wonderfully fragrant—full of cinnamon, orange peel, and just a touch of sweetness. I wrapped my hands around the warm cup and enjoyed every soothing sip.

Roman Hug in a Mug

Mulled wine is a warm, aromatic drink traditionally made by gently heating red wine with a blend of spices, citrus, and a touch of sweetness. As it steeps, the flavors mingle into something comforting and fragrant—think cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and orange peel filling the air with a cozy, festive scent.

What I Learned

  • The Romans were among the first to heat wine and add spices. They believed it helped keep them healthy and ward off winter illnesses. Mulled wine spread across Europe as the Roman Empire expanded.
  • The term “mulled” comes from the Old English word mullen, meaning “to crush or grind,” referring to the crushing of spices added to the wine.

  • Mulled wine became a classic winter holiday drink in Northern Europe, especially in Germany (where it’s called Glühwein) and Scandinavia (Glögg).

Olá from Lisbon,

I’ve been wandering these sunlit cobblestone streets, and everywhere I turn there’s a café calling my name. And of course, I’ve answered—with a glass of the most delightful sangria in hand! Lisbon’s sangria is fruity, bright, and far too easy to enjoy… I’m convinced it tastes better simply because I’m sipping it by the Tagus River.
